Basic rules to find Paris rooms at budget chain hotels
Cheap hotels in Paris are relative in what can be an expensive city. There is no single best strategy to find budget hotels in Paris.
Follow some basic rules though and you should be able to locate the cheap Paris hotels suitable for your needs.
Clearly it is unreasonable to expect to find inexpensive hotels in the most sought-after areas around the Champs-Elysees, Louvre, Opera Garnier and St Germain area of the Left Bank.
A great way to set a benchmark price to beat for hotel accommodation in Paris is to get prices and options from the Accor hotels.
The Hotel F1, ibis Budget, ibis and ibis Styles are found in almost every district of Paris and often will offer the cheapest accommodation in a given area.
What to expect from cheap hotels in Paris?
Accor hotel budget chains Ibis and HotelF1
The HotelF1 and ibis Budget chains are the lowest price on offer.
The reason for this is largely down to their location, mostly very close to the inner orbital road around Paris.
You'll normally have the inconvenience of a 10-minute walk to the nearest Metro plus a 20-minute ride into the centre as the price to pay for the low charges.
Hotel F1 is cheaper than ibis Budget, by virtue of most rooms not being en suite, however F1 have recently brought in a few rooms with private bathrooms for around €7 extra.
ibis and ibis Styles, are found throughout Paris. ibis Styles normally have large family rooms available and breakfast is included in the room rate. All Accor budget chains offer free Wi-Fi.
Hotel districts cheaper at weekends and holidays
Room rates reflect demand and in this computer age room rates are not fixed, what you pay reflects how hard the hotel finds it to get customers.
In districts sought out by leisure visitors there tends to be a premium for rates at the weekend. Conversely business districts struggle at the weekends as their core market disappears.
At the weekend probably the best two districts for value for money are the La Defense and Bercy districts. Neither is central but both have fast Metro and RER links that will get you to the centre in 20 minutes and save you a bundle.
August is the quietest month of year as most Parisians flee the city and business grinds to a stop. Again the business districts are cheap in August.
Budget hotel districts
The hotel district around some of the main railway stations in Paris are particularly fruitful for budget accommodation. Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est, Paris Gare de Lyon and Montparnasse are notable.
If any of these are your arrival gateways in Paris, they are probably your benchmark district to check out. For those flying into Paris, all of the stations have very good links to the airports.
These railway stations are also public transport hubs with multiple Metro lines that will get you to wherever you want to go in Paris quickly and cheaply.
Other major budget districts are Montmartre and around Bastille/Republique, just east of the Marais district.
Although you may associate Paris hostels with shared dormitory accommodation that maybe you would not consider, most hostels also have private rooms with en suite bathrooms.
Many such rooms can accommodate groups of 4 or 6 too. You really need to be under 35 to use these as an option.
