Range of cheap hotels to east of Paris city centre beyond the Marais
Hotels in the Republique and Bastille area of Paris are a step change cheaper in price than the city centre just a few Metro stops away.
This district is just to the east of Paris city centre, beyond the Marais district. It is a lively area with lots of cheap restaurants, bars, convenience stores and supermarkets used by the locals, again offering great value compared to more tourist districts.
The area is ill-defined; connecting Republique and the Bastille is a wide boulevard, one of the main traffic arteries of the area.
To the west of this boulevard is the Marais district which certainly does attract visitors. Hotels here are relatively dispersed and you do pay a definite price premium to the hotels east and north-east from the Marais.
What to expect from the Republique and Bastille hotel area of Paris?
Location and transport
There is quite a dense network of Metro lines and bus routes here that will quickly get you to sights like the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral.
The Canal Saint Martin runs through this area and in the last few years has been attractively redeveloped with bars, restaurants and a walkway to replace the old warehouses and industry.
Between Republique and Bastille the canal runs underground though emerging by Bastille to quickly join the River Seine.
Alternative nearby hotels districts
Just to the north of this district are two of the main railway stations of Paris, the Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est both of which are also very good budget hotel areas. Similarly, just to the south of Bastille is Gare de Lyon, another major Paris train station with value hotels all around it.
Just to the south of Gare de Lyon is the Bercy district, one stop away on line 14 of the Metro.
The Bercy district has a large number of newish, chain hotels that can offer competitively priced rooms well below that of similar hotels 1-2 km away at the Gare de Lyon.
